[ARCHIVED] Fiber Optic Network Discussion from OneSource and Town Council

OneSource Fiber Optic (2)

Trophy Club, TX (June 28, 2022) – OneSource Communications has contracted with Hunt Communications to lay a fiber internet line through Trophy Club in areas that do not currently have access to internet at fiber speeds.

Neighborhoods such as Trophy Club tend to have high demands on internet infrastructure, from working at home to streaming movies and gaming. Often these activities are all taking place at once.

OneSource is an internet provider that has sought to compete in Trophy Club for residents' internet business.  As a utility provider, they have the right by state law to work in a utility right-of-way within private properties in Trophy Club. The Town does not have the right to limit their access or require them to change how the project is engineered.

Town staff has met multiple times with representatives from OneSource, and a state OneSource representative spoke at a Council meeting earlier in the year to describe the project. The OneSource contact assured Town Council and staff that they would return yard landscaping as close as possible to their pre-project condition. There should be no landscaping in the right-of-way other than grass, as utility companies have the right to work in this area.

OneSource has been repairing yards as they complete the different sections of the project. They have been doing minor repairs immediately after work as completed on single residences. They will have landscapers come back through the area once the work in each project section is completed.

The Town and OneSource are aware that crews have hit some residential sprinkler lines, gas lines, and even a water main during the work. To staff's knowledge, all residential sprinkler lines have been repaired by OneSource promptly. The gas lines and water mains were impaired primarily due to the location of said lines being inaccurate. Both instances have also been fixed within a reasonable amount of time by their providers (Oncor, TCMUD No.1).

OneSource has also graciously changed its engineering at the request of Town staff, moving away from above-the-ground junction boxes to in-ground boxes at their expense.  Residents would see an above-ground box at every other home if this change were not made.

Residents can choose to keep their current internet provider or change to OneSource.  The internet line will not be run from the junction boxes to the homes unless the homeowner decides to use OneSource as their internet provider.
