[ARCHIVED] This July We're Sharing the Benefits of Parks and Recreation in TC and Beyond

Park and Rec Month

Trophy Club, TX (July 10, 2021) – This July, the Town of Trophy Club is celebrating National Park and Recreation Month. Trophy Club is stronger, more vibrant and more resilient because of parks and recreation. According to NRPA’s 2020 Engagement with Parks Report, an overwhelming majority of people living in the U.S. assert that they benefit from local parks and that their communities benefit from local parks.

  • People visit their local park and recreation facilities more than twice a month, on average, with 1 in 10 visiting at least weekly, if not daily.
  • Three in five people — or more than 190 million people — visited a local park, trail public open space or recreation facility during the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic (mid-March through mid-June 2020).
  • 82 percent of U.S. adults agree that visiting their local parks, trails and open spaces is essential for their mental and physical well-being during the COVID19 pandemic.
  • More than four in five people living in the U.S. agree that parks and recreation are an important local government service.
  • Support for local parks is widespread, spanning different age groups, income levels, household types and political affiliations
  • And, according to a 2021 NRPA Park Pulse poll, six in seven U.S. adults look forward to outdoor activities this spring and summer.

“Easy access to parks, green spaces, and recreation areas are critical to the wellbeing of urban communities, especially ours” stated Mayor Fleury.  “From improving the health and wellness of our residents to creating a healthier physical environment, our parks are vital.”

In addition, it’s not just important to support parks and recreation as a whole, it’s important for your health and wellness and it benefits EVERYONE in that way! Did you know:

  • The Centers for Disease Control found that increased access to places for physical activity led to a 25.6 percent increase in people exercising 3 or more times per week.
  • Living close to parks and other recreation facilities is consistently related to higher physical activity levels for both adults and youth. Moreover, parks provide a connection to nature, which studies demonstrate relieves stress, strengthens interpersonal relationships and improves mental health.
  • Various research studies are confirming that community parks and recreation, green spaces and time outdoors are critical for creating healthy, active and sustainable communities.
  • Children that have easy access to a playground are approximately five times more likely to have a healthy weight than children that do not have easy access to playgrounds.
  • In the U.S., 93 percent of adults say their mental health is improved by services offered by local park and recreation professionals and agencies.
  • According to the June 2021 NRPA Park Pulse, the top three mental health opportunities found in parks and recreation are socializing with friends and family, spending time in nature and exercising.
  • The nation’s park and recreation professionals are on the frontline in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic, homelessness, substance use disorder, the obesity epidemic and other chronic health issues.

With so many reasons why, it’s no wonder Trophy Club is celebrating Park and Recreation Month, (the initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association), by inviting our community to share their experiences, memories and stories about what parks and recreation mean to them. With everything from our wonderful Community Events, Community Pool and Splash Pad, Athletic Courts, Trails, Parks and Paths, there are plenty of ways that you can celebrate with us as well!

"With a team in place like ours and the priority Town Council has placed on keeping the Towns' aesthetic and recreational value high, I can't think of a better place for people to experience the benefits that Parks and Recreation bring into their daily lives," said Town Manager Wade Carroll.

NRPA encourages people that support parks and recreation to share their park and recreation story, as well as why their local park and recreation professionals are important to them, with the hashtag #OurParkAndRecStory.
