North Texas Region Works Together to Combat West Nile Virus

The North Texas health departments of Collin, Dallas, Denton, and Tarrant counties are again coordinating their planning efforts to make a collective impact on this year’s West Nile virus season.

The 2012 West Nile virus season was unexpected and took a significant toll on the health of citizens of the North Texas region. Ground and aerial spraying were used in areas of the region to reduce the mosquito population potentially carrying the virus. July 27, 2013 --- UPDATE:  The Denton County Health Department (DCHD) has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus for 2013 in the county. The patient is in his 40s, resides in the City of Denton, and has West Nile fever (the milder form of the illness). For patient confidentiality reasons, no further personal information will be released.

The first reported human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Denton County appeared in June 2012 and within three months the Denton County Health Department (DCHD) confirmed two human cases of WNV in Trophy Club (August 2012). Human WNV cases popped up in cities all over North Texas forcing many municipalities to make a challenging decision regarding aerial spraying for mosquitoes (Trophy Club opted in for aerial spraying). In 2012 Denton County reported 184 total human cases and two deaths caused by the disease.
